The Pulitzer Prizes came out yesterday and you can see the whole list of winners here. A few of the prizes dealt with religious themes.
Sexy makeover for natural family planning
I’m not Catholic, but I’m part of a religious tradition that embraces children and affirms large families. I had absolutely no idea how counter-cultural this was until I became an adult and was surrounded by contraceptive messaging. When I got married, my girlfriends gave me copies of books such as the one pictured here. They told me stories about how they spaced out their children or learned how to get pregnant. I think, in fact, that as many people who use what is frequently called “Natural Family Planning” are doing so in order to achieve pregnancy as to avoid it.
A 'war on women' ceasefire?
As anyone who has read GetReligion over the last three or so months might have picked up, I occasionally disapproved of the way many media outlets took serious concerns that some folks have over Planned Parenthood or religious liberty and turned them into a non-stop meme regarding a “War on Women.” I was pretty subtle about it, but you may have noticed me bringing it up once or twice (OK, two dozen at last count).
Yoga, Hinduism and Islam
Mixed bag of atheism coverage
I want to get a couple atheist stories out of my guilt file before it’s too late. Ignore this YouTube here for a second and let’s look at the good media coverage. Here’s the Associated Press report on a recent atheist event:
Confession, absolution and The Big Lebowski
Yesterday I came across an ABC News/Nightline request for help with a story they’re hypingreporting:
Women aren't wearing hats. So?
Yesterday morning at our beautiful Easter service, I looked across the aisle of our completely packed church and saw one of the young women at church wearing a fantastic hat. And I think Becky may have been the only woman wearing a hat. Immediately I felt a pang of regret that I hadn’t remembered to put my outfit together with a hat.
Holy days and baseball
A reader sent in this story about Rick Santorum taking a mysterious four day break from his presidential campaign. There was a reference by Santorum himself to a “holiday weekend,” the story didn’t explore whether maybe the break had anything to do with the Triduum.
A hate-filled non-hate crime?
I’ve mentioned my desire for more information on the brutal killing of Shaima Alawadi. And new information we are getting. First, let’s review some of the recent stories about her murder.
