It takes time to defend history

history byzantine8For those who are curious, I am hanging in there on our request for a correction in em>The Washington Post about that April story by correspondent Karl Vick. That was the one with the headline that said "In Turkey, a Deep Suspicion of Missionaries: Priest's Killing Shows Complex Ties of Islam to Nationalism in Officially Secular State." It's the story that, while explaining deadly strife in Istanbul between Islamists and Christians, said:

The tension dates at least to the 13th century, when Christian Crusaders sacked what is today Istanbul.

"Missionaries and the Crusades are related," Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs declared in a pamphlet published last June.

The problem, of course, is that Constantinople was, in 1204, the center of Eastern Christianity. Muslims did not take the city until 1453. Anyway, here is the latest email from an editor at the international desk:

I have discussed the correction with David Hoffman, the Assistant Managing Editor in Charge of the Foreign Desk. He would like to have this resolved as soon as possible. As of right now, we are waiting to hear from Karl Vick who is on vacation and unreachable. We will proceed as soon as he returns. Thanks for your understanding.

This may take time. The wheels of history turn slowly.
