Clearly, the unfolding nuclear drama in Iran is one of the world’s most important news stories. If that is the case, and I think it is, there is a strange and powerful ghost that is haunting almost all of the mainstream news coverage of what is happening.

Israel's Jewish question

There have been a lot of stories in the past week about the conversion bill that was steamrolling through the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, before being tabled for the next few months. Few prospective laws in the Middle East draw much attention, but this one did, largely because of it’s potential consequences for American Jews and future American Jews.

Long beards and black hats

Good Shabbos. It’s a great day to be wearing my favorite t-shirt. But it’s a tough Sabbath to be an Ultra-Orthodox Jew in Jerusalem. (For last week’s discussion on the use of “ultra-orthodox,” click here.) Since the Israeli Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a religious girls’ school had to be integrated, the Haredim have been causing a lot of trouble in Jerusalem streets.

Helen Thomas undone

Thomas, who covered every president since the second Adams, was undone when the above footage surfaced online of Thomas telling the Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine” and go back to “Poland, Germany … and America and everywhere else.”
