The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles has revised Bishop Jon Bruno's PowerPoint presentation, "The Anglican Communion: A Roomy House," to reflect the uncertain nature of a remark credited to Richard Hooker (original slide at left). GetReligion first covered this matter on March 29.
The diocese has added "attributed to" on a line that previously said only "Richard Hooker." Bishop Bruno's original PowerPoint lecture (3.8 MB) is available at this permalink. His revised presentation is available, both in PowerPoint and in HTML, at this link on the diocese's website.
Perhaps more people will now think of the Hooker remark in the category of He Coulda/Woulda/Shoulda Said It, along with "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace," the treacly Catholic folk song attributed to St. Francis.
The remark may also be an Anglican version of the 100th Monkey theory.
In any case, the diocese has shown the humility to acknowledge that the remark's authenticity is disputed. So far Bishop Bruno is the only person who has used the remark but then made a public revision.
